ARTFUL NEGOTIATION THROUGH WRITING

MAURICIO DIAZ DE LEON

UWRT 1102-004

This space is an area of creative writing where I express my ideas on several topics, while undergoing a writing process.  I'm a currently a student at UNCC who is looking forward to graduating this fall, and am also pursuing a double major in Language and Culture Studies and Business.  I really enjoy art, especially music, languages, philosohy, and science, and I try to find time throughout the week to devote to these awesome endeavors.  You will find most of my writing on different topics reflects my strong inclination towards these subjects, particularly philosophy.

My first language is Spanish, and as such, my writing style is influenced by the linguistic patterns of my native tongue.  I like to think of writing as artful negotiation because of the artistic qualities and the non-verbal exchange between a reader and an author that is unique in the art of writing.  It's artistic because there is expression through a medium, the page and the words on the page.  It's artistic because there is rhythm and pacing, especially in poetry, and these are key elements of music.  It's negotiation because there is an exchange between the reader and the writer, where ideas are being offered by the writer and accepted by the reader.  All writing seeks to transfer the idea or information as best as possible, and all readers seek to understand these ideas as best as possible.  Thus, we have some form of negotiation ensuing.

I find this aspect of the writing process so important, that I focus a great deal on explaining why I think what I think.  Afterall, you can't negotiate effectively without good reasons...
